Craziness on my return from Thailand
So I was originally on an Air India flight from Bangkok to Toronto, with one stop in New Delhi. When I arrived in India, I discoevred my Toronto flight was completely cancelled, along with a flight to Paris and one to Frankfurt. The AI employees were pretty good to us: they took us to a (creepy, abandoned) hotel to wait for our follow-on flights, which were all in the middle of the night.
So there I was, surrounded by a bunch of Parisians. Another Canadian girl and I were sitting at a table with a French guy who didn’t speak English very well. The other girl didn’t speak French, so I was translating between them. We sort of ended up talking about parts of Franced, and the French guy said he would like the south of France, except it has too many gypsies. (Well, he said “gitanes”, because that’s the word in French, but that’s what it means)
I stared at him and the other girl must have seen something in my face because she was all “What did he say?” and I told her and she was like “WTF? Is he serious?” And I said, “Excuse me?” And he goes on to tell me yeah, they’re just dirty…they don’t sleep in caravans anymore, they have houses, but he just doesn’t want to be anywhere near them.
He’s not the first French person I’ve met who gets so crazy racist about les gitanes. I don’t know what the hell is up with that.
